I'm heading to Japan mid February and not exactly sure what range of weather conditions to expect.

I'm thinking of starting with an uninsulated Goretex shell jacket and pants, merrino base layer - what would you guys suggest for additional layers? Will I need a more insulated jacket?

Cheers!

If you have a mix of layers, I would just bring something to cover all your bases. For me, I’m either wearing a midweight layer and that’s it, or I wear my Burton expedition fleece. If it’s cold enough, I wear both. Bringing two different sets of layers is barely going to make a difference in your luggage

I've ridden Japan a couple of times, including in February during a big storm cycle. I didn't find it to be all that cold. I went with my normal goretex shell layer backed by a first layer on the bottom and a first layer and tech flannel up top. I brought an extra midlayer, but never needed it.

Where do you usually ride and what do you usually wear while riding there?

lots of good layering talk in the Outerwear thread, I think a few Japan dudes may have posted what they run.

Thanks for the great advice.

I haven't ridden for a quite few years now.... I'm making a comeback! In the past I rode in Europe, USA, NZ, Australia, Canada etc. I worked in the boardsports industry so would just grab outerwear samples and layer up whatever underneath. It wasn't a very considered technical approach 🙂

These days I'm all about comfort.

Depends also where you are going, gets colder up north than down south.

I usually wear a mid weight base layer and if its cold I wear another merino mid weight base layer on top. Then a gortex shell. Been to (feels like with wind) -20 in niseko and I was a bit cold but not too bad.

I was in February, minus 10 and lower was usual.

Only wore my polartec AK first layer and a cheap special blend jacket over my 10 year old Nixon hoodie..

Obviously, the balaclava is a must, but I never felt cold during the day.
