Word, thanks for the feedback. I do prefer camber, but flat isn’t bad. I mean, Charlie is flat to rocker, so it must be okay...

I really like small, stiff tails. Part of the reason a lot of us set our stances forward on the fish is to gain a little more tail. The factory set back is definitely in the rear.

My experience with the super small tail like that was not positive in anything other than pow. It was okay on super smooth groomers, but as soon as they got bumpy it was not fun to ride. In real world terms it went like this for me.

Pow day - Small tail board for the AM and untracked turns, after about noon, when shit starts getting tracked out and groomers are bumpy it was time to switch to another deck with more tail to still be able to enjoy myself...   YMMV

Ok...which one of you animals wants a 160 black scales?

so. much. want.

Also, the "shitfish" was ascribed to the Branch Manager as we were all abbreviating it as the "BM" which turned in to "bowel movement" which evolved in to "shitfish."  That board has the low speed rail-ability of the 56 Fish but with the benefit of a full tail and stiffer camber.  It was super fun in the trees and higher speed pow, but felt generally pretty heavy and not as floaty in lower speed/lower angle situations and did not get up and planing as quickly as a Fish (to be expected).  I say size up in a Fish (i.e. the 160) before getting your size (54 or 58) in the BM unless you want a more do-it-all less tapered/setback deck.

@pow_hnd I can definitely see that regarding the shorter tail.  I always felt a happy compromise is going longer than recommended on a fish.  I should be the 56, which is more than enough board and super fun, but I really think I prefer the 60 with a slightly ahead of reference stance.  Maybe that would solve some of what you experienced?

Honestly, my experience has been the opposite. I love the short tail on the Fish and even run my bindings back about 1/4". It's great for powder, and I can come to a stop to wait for my buddy without the nose dropping. The only time I give up a little is at high speed, which doesn't happen all that much.

For riding cruddy groomers I also like the short tail. With so little board behind me I barely get bounced around, and that huge nose out in front just plows through everything.

What are the chances Burton stops making the Fish after this year's Mystery Fish? Isn't that how they killed off the Malolo, with a Mystery Malolo swansong?

I can't see B killing off the fish ----- But you have a valid point with the Malolo(imo one of B greatest decks all time ..I had the red full camber 162)

the Malolo did disappear for a few seasons in between, while the Fish hasn’t gone anywhere. I think the Malolo Mystery was just made to tempt old lovers of the shape into dropping $2k on one. I don’t think it worked that well. the Fish seems to be selling decently, on the other hand, so maybe it’ll stay Mystery-level? it’s also made at Craig’s vs the Malolo being Austrian, so maybe that makes a difference (along w/ the $200 price drop).

There is a 2015? 161 on sale with cartels in Anchorage for $275...if anyone is around that area, place is called The Hoarding Marmot, they will not sell the board on its own, I already called and asked.

I could totally see Burton dropping the fish for a season or two to build up that sweet sweet nostalgia demand when they bring it back. They love that shit.

I have pled with JG the last couple of years to throw a s-rocker/camber fish out there for the deep Winter releases they have been going. I would be all over that shit.

I haven’t been this excited for a board in a while.

I had a brand new red 156 right before they announced the 2009 with s-rocker, so I sold it and got the 2009 retro. No regrets, but I wish I had another crack at a new red 08. The one I scored last year is fine, but the edges need work.
