im not guna lie, i struggled with closer, at least in the beginning. i don't well these days with a ton of slow-mo it just rubs me the wrong way. overall it was pretty rad though

Yeah me too. It was like 4mins for what seemed like a single trick. But the film got better (way better) as it progressed.

I loved the slow-mo!

Maybe I'm getting old, but I cant stand those 40 cuts per minute films anymore..

I want to see what's happening, not live in fear of an epileptic episode because a lack of skill had to be compensated by a ton of fast cuts...

So, I have no idea how it happened, but 3 weeks back, as I am wiping down the Pencil + after a waxing, I notice the topsheet on the heel edge has a series of serrated cracks. I figure must've done something to bend the board in such a way as to crack things up. Where I ride, Hakkoda, the terrain is pretty gnarly. Treewells, windlips, creeks…

Anyways, I emailed a few photos to Korua and within a few hours I got a reply that said basically "not covered by warranty. But, we'll send you a new board. Whatcha want?"

Within 4 days I had a brand new Pencil Split.

I handed the Plus to a local dude who makes/repairs boards (and custom chops boards into splits) and he epoxied it up for 30 bucks. He says the core's compromised, so the board won't last much longer. Obviously the "lightness" tradeoff is robustness.

Anyways, love the Pencil and am very happy having a split version of it as I'll be spending the next two months mainly doing that.

Wow!!

So I was selling my Stealth and Triple8Sol came to see it in person at work. I thought it's in great shape but specifically showed him some spiderweb on the top sheet and he said the same thing as your dude: that he was concerned the core may be compromised! So I told him to not buy the board then, as I can't guarantee anything, and decided to keep it as my rock board.

Now I wonder if I can get a replacement from Korua like you did. Can you post a pic so that I can see if this looks similar, please.

Yep, was how I found out about this pod also. Great convo, esp getting to know his shred beginnings, views etc. Good listen for sure. The Todd Richards and Stale pods were dope too.

Update: sent a note + pics to Korua and Marko said it's cosmetic / not dangerous to ride as is but I'm still getting a replacement!

Wanted to share here so that folks know Korua is taking care of people 🙂

Does anyone have experience with the Korua Trenchdigger? I'm looking for a long length, big sidecut snowboard to get next and the Trenchdigger seems to fit the bill.

Debating between the Korua Trenchdigger, K2 Overboard, and United Shapes Orbit.

As long as you are up to putting enough input into the board at all times for it to ride well (stiff, long, huge sidecut) that is probably an excellent choice.

I understand why they do wide waists on most of their boards, but I do like that the trenchdigger is slightly less so.

A lot of the specs, although not identical, remind me of what the Nidecker gun might be, specifically the 171.

I think the orbit is going to be the furthest away, much more normal and agile. The overboard a little less far away, as it has a little more length and a larger radius… But, I think the trenchdigger is really going to stand out as wanting to go full speed and do huge, long-arc carves all the time because of its design. But, once you click with the energy the board wants, that should become extremely fun

I started listening to these this weekend driving up to Lassen. Listened to Wolken, Richards, Stales, and Jeremy Jones.

Best snowboard podcast I've heard. I've tried a few others and I've found the hosts push their agenda too much, the recording quality is nigh unlistenable, and/or they're simply not that good at fostering insightful and interesting conversations.

agree.  when i got around to it i was pleasantly surprised by the quality and tried a few more.  very relatable recurring theme on the changing relationship with sliding as one ages.

on the surf side the hayden cox one was funny because hayden just kept talking.  more a monologue than a conversation, but i still enjoyed that one too.

Quick review of the Café Racer 159.

I spent about 75% of my season on this thing, and when I wasn't riding it, I often found myself wishing I was. Without a doubt, my daily driver this winter.

It felt like a plank at first. I've really only been riding Burton boards for the last few years and didn't realize how legit their "Infinite Ride" claim of pre-breaking-in was until I rode a Korua. The CR felt plankish and unfriendly at first, like some others have said. I even almost sold it (just as I had sold my Stealth 163 for the same reasons. Regrettable). After a handful of days, however, it started to spring more out of turns and started boosting a little higher off side hits and rollers. I narrowed my stance by an inch and went to double-positive angles; total game changer. Diligent break-in and willingness to change my stance really opened up what this board can do.

It's not a versatile ride, but after 26 season on snow, I'm no longer a particularly versatile rider. I like to charge hard, carve a lot and go really, really fast. I barely ever ride switch anymore and I don't hit jibs. This board let me do the things I want to do on a snowboard, and if I ever washed out or didn't stick a landing, the deck was never to blame. In pow, it floats as easily as my Cheetah or my LandLord, although isn't quite as nimble as either of those. It does, however, tear up groomers harder than either, and since I live in Ontario and powder days are woefully limited, the Café Racer suited me perfectly.

I love it enough to have just pulled the trigger on a Café Racer+. We'll see how that goes. In the meantime, I'm sold on Korua 100%.

Did the board break in, or did you get used to it 🤔
