Japanese Brands - Exotic mysticism at high prices. The "vinyl just sounds better" of snowboards.

Perfect.

Yeah there was swallow tails, asymmetrical, and every idea under the sun in mid nineties snowboard shapes. By the turn of the century it was popsicle city! The B fish was one deck with a cult following going for a pow surfy vibe. A quiver board before quiver boards were a thing. Not like they sold a ton. But they stuck with it and evolved it and spawned a ton of new shit from it.

Hey Merv congratulations for jumpin on the bandwagon 20 years later! You did better!...wit 7 bumps (5 of which are unnecessary) and banana! Here’s a Fukin cookie!🍪

pfffffffffffft

This is where I don't think Burton gets given the credit they deserve. Late nineties/early 2000s as you say was 'popsicle city'. Everybody was riding a 160cm Custom X, Balance etc. Nobody was making a Fish when Burton started. I remember looking at it in catalogues as a kid and wondering what the heck it was.

I think magnetraction helps offset the rocker. That could be a bullshit assumption though. I'd be interested in trying something like C2 without magnetraction.

Mervin branding and art is definitely a turn off, but there's something to hate in all big brands though once you dig in a bit.

Burton - The patagucci of snowboard brands. "Mystery", "Family Tree", even the term "Fish" is all just marketing.

K2/Salomon/Rossi - Ski brands. I mean listen to this rep. (Tim Eddy for president though)

Nitro - Just the brand name is cringey. Sure they have the Quiver series, which is great if you rock size 10s, but do you really want to walk in to a shop and ask for a "Quiver Cannon"? And while I'm on it, the term "quiver" is just a douchey way to say you own more than one snowboard.

Never Summer - Libtech for dads from Texas.

Capita/DC/etc... - Always seems to be ridden by the "Yewwww, for da boysz!" types.

Japanese Brands - Exotic mysticism at high prices. The "vinyl just sounds better" of snowboards.

Jones - Jones

Lib Tech board description I read on some shop site said 'some kind of magnetraction/grip teach is a must on C2/flying-v boards or they are almost unrideable'. Same site also sold Custom Flying-V (no edge tech)...

Genius post. I realise you are joking but I actually kind of like Nitro's name. Nitro makes me think of 80s snowboarders in neon one-pieces. That and explosions. I realise it's silly but I think anything that prevents the brand from taking itself too seriously is a good thing. Snowboards are basically just toys after all.

I feel like Jones is the only co that no one ever talks shit about?

I think Jones gets a fair bit of shit. A lot of it deserved. I think drjcv says that J-Jones wants to make snowboarding in to skiing. I don't like how when they first started they marketed their blunted nose shapes as being better for float, and better at cutting through pow without creating drag (compared to pointed shapes). Then the wacky tip shape craze hit and now they have pointed tips.

Talking about the orca and fish together is silly. They are nothing alike, and they are not supposed to be. The fact that Travis keeps bringing it up in his speeches about the board is weird… the two have absolutely nothing to do with each other. The orca isn’t a stronger fish, it’s a different board entirely. Totally different design, other than the fact that they are both directional (at pretty different levels).  I also guarantee I would still love carving on my fishes way more than the orca because of its design, in fact. His claim that it’s the best carving board he’s ever been on is dumb. If he meant he personally likes it the most, he should’ve said that, but he is trying to tell us that it will out-carve the majority of other decks. Come on. No.

Most people probably just see the cut of the kicks on any board and go “POWDER!!!!” even when it’s clearly just a twin. A couple arbor boards come to mind off the top of my head. It’s not a fucking powder board, it’s a twin with a tip that comes to a point, which actually might be smaller than your tail because it becomes narrower faster.  Or the flipside, people look at the hovercraft and instantly think fish. That board is a total freeride machine, and it doesn’t even have a small tail if you take a second to think. This also reminds me of people who talk about the blunt vs pointy shapes of the normal T-rice models… they say the pointy tips help in powder. Are you kidding? Do you realize how very, very little extra material is there in comparison to the blunt shape? It literally won’t make a difference to anyone. Stuff like that trips me out and I don’t know how people miss it.  Yeah, I am a nerd, but it doesn’t take that to get it.

Doing it for the sake of looking a certain way is definitely one thing, but that’s not to be confused or lumped with functionally-shaped directional boards.

For example, one could easily put the blunt diamond in the former category, but it is a very smooth, purpose driven shape.  It also isn’t marketed, has almost no graphics, and is actually a pretty good price,  especially when @mig has done a little discount and free shipping to the US. Then you look at something like the stun gun with all the weird notchy cuts to it, or the orca for that matter.  The skeleton key tail is also stuck in my head, when it comes to this topic. Those are just shapes for the sake of being shaped. The rest of the board is functionally designed, of course, but if it’s over-done pointless shaping, it’s kind of a turn off. The squash tail made me think that a little bit at first just cause of the straight cuts of the swallow. But.. man I love that thing.  There are some boards that are basically twins with shaped nose and tail where it seems tastefully done, though. First one I can think of is the hyperkyarve. I love that shape, but I know it’s not a board for me because I can see past the tips 🤪

As someone who just picked up a Moss Performance Quad 154... I won't say it rides better, but it for sure rides different than anything else I've ever strapped to my feet. Freaking next level in pow. Definitely an upper range of terrain gnarliness I'm comfortable riding it on. I was pretty sketched out trying to ride it at Jackson Hole after things got tracked and swapped to my Cadet after a couple runs.

I had a Burton joystick 🕹 which was Flying V.  Outside of soft snow that was an absolute death sled on hard snow   Jokes aside mtx is perfect on rocker decks

The orca isn’t a stronger fish, it’s a different board entirely. Totally different design, other than the fact that they are both directional (and prett different levels of).  I also guarantee you that I would love carving on my fishes exponentially more than the orca because of its design, in fact. His claim that it’s the best carving board he’s ever been on is total horseshit. If he meant he personally likes it the most, he should’ve said that, but he is trying to tell us that it will out-carve the majority of other decks. Come on. No. Lastly, unless you ride it too small or get one of the newer ones, the fish is absolutely not gutless. It’s a ripper, it’s just not a twin that everyone up until recently had been used to.

If anyone looks at each of those two board designs and thinks they are comparable, I would go ahead and say you are not good at basic deciphering of boards.  For example, there are a lot of boards that have a pointy tip and a notch swallowtail that are almost literally twins other than that, but when the company talks about how they are good in powder, people jump on it without even thinking.  Or they just see the cut of the kicks and go “POWDER!!!!” A couple arbor boards come to mind off the top of my head. It’s not a fucking powder board, it’s a twin with a tip that comes to a point, which actually might be smaller than your tail because it becomes narrower faster.  Or the flipside, people look at the hovercraft and instantly think fish. That board is a total freeride machine and it absolutely does not have a small tail if you take a second to think.  Doesn’t ride at all like any of the directional fishy powder boards.  This also reminds me of a bunch of people I’ve heard talk about the blunt vs pointy shapes of the normal T-rice models… they talk about how the pointy tips help in powder. Are you kidding me? Do you realize how very, very little extra material is there in comparison to the blunt shape? And extra material on your tail too. It literally won’t make a difference to anyone. Huh?  The flat fish is not a “ripper “. I’m a fish fan myself but My blood fish was medium flex at most with serviceable performance on hard pack but there’s no way in hell on this planet it’s an aggressive board unless you’re a 120 lb child   If pushed that thing it would fold and skip out. Would love to get on an orca .
