Sounds like a great trip! I looked at the instagrams, too. Brought back REALLY good memories...

Hey y'all

We're going back to Hokkaido this Christmas.

My favourite thing last time was the "Hokkaido Express" named tour, where we would travel the island in a bus, hunting for the best pow.

Problem is, the Black Diamond Tours don't offer guided tours that early in the season, unless you've got a group of 5+ ppl to book a private tour.

I was wondering if anyone would like to join up with us?

If all goes as planned, my mates from Oz are coming too, so we'd be 4 people already

Trip dates: december 20th (flying on friday/saturday) to january 5th (return on saturday).

The private tour would be 7-10 days, but we can vote on that. The rest (first few days, especially) of the time, we will spend without guide, around Niseko/Rusutsu, to get accustomed to the jet lag, the snow conditions, and to save money.

Cheers

Heading to Niseko for my second time end of Jan.

Going to ride there for a few days, but also want to venture out a bit.  Thinking of doing a guided tour, do any of you have any recommendations for a company?

Also heading over to a couple other resorts.  Looks like maybe Rusutsu is the place to go?  Any other recommendations?

Actually never been to Hawaii and coming from the east coast we found flights to stop in Hawaii for a couple of days and then direct to Sapporo, which is great so we won't have to transfer through Tokyo.

Barring a catastrophe, I'm on track to do a third season at Hakkoda. If any of y'all pass through, gimme a ping. 🙂

I miss Hakkoda. I was a season pass holder there for 3 years back in the 90s. I'm moving to Kanagawa in a few weeks, but the wife's family is in Aomori. I plan to make a few trips up there this winter, so I'll hit you up.

Hakkoda is rad. We stayed at the Sansou Lodge and rode with a guide from the Mt Hakkoda Guide Club a couple of years ago. Super fun, even though the flat run-outs down low were sucky.

Will be in Hokkaido for Christmas and New Year's..

Anyone else in the vicinity of Niseko around that time?

We're planning on doing a guided trip across the island to hunt for some great powder (e.g. in Asahidake, etc.)

El Nino. Bad news for "Japow"

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-weather-elnino/japan-weather-bureau-says-el-nino-appears-to-have-formed-idUSKCN1NE0CO

(Locals tell me 15-16 was a terrible season.)

I wouldn't be too concerned. El Nino is finicky and you never know what the impact will be. The PNW is more susceptible to the El Nino effect than Japan.
