The train ride last season made for a good story and was a good experience, but I wouldn't do it again. I'd def recommend the 1.5hr flight I took this time (from SEA/PDX) over a 13hr train ride for not much more $$.

Great mountain! Didn't get any big dumps but had a couple 4”+ days and a couple blue sky days which you don't get very many in Whitefish. Rode with some local skiers and boarders. Hellroaring basin is sick. What everyone else has said, be prepared for low visibility and I mean fucking low. When the fog rolls in stay in the trees, follow someone or if the snow is bad hug the tree line on groomers(if there is one, those open bowls and thick fog are trippy) . I took yellow, rose, blue, and dark lens. I only used the yellow and blue. Most of the locals I met were using blue for everything. I will be going back.

thinking about taking a solo train trip out here, maybe end of January, but it sounds like March is prime time. is it worth it to wait?

I'm doing the same. Whitefish sometime in early-mid March. It's pretty much an annual pilgrimage now.

I'm down if we can get the dates lined up. Not sure how far in advance I'd be willing to book. Did Juneau last year, and didn't get enough snow to spin the non-baby lift. Trip was still fun, but I can't have 2 trips in a row not materialize.

idk about lodging, but i've heard [a rumor] that you can buy airline miles, instead of a ticket, and cash them in for a ticket last minute so you can "storm chase." idk how true/valid that is, but maybe something to check in to.

Any of you EL dorks doing the Nate Chute banked slalom or Boardercross this weekend?
