There used to be a Surfing thread on the old el.

This video gives me anxiety watching it, around the 10:00 minute mark I cant sit still

I did some surfing the last few years, having never done it before.

Things I discovered:

 - it's not as easy as it looks.

 - it's exhausting.

 - the sea can be damn scary.

I grew up surfing and skating, went to college and had a roommate that was a skier. I started snowboarding and forgot about surfing.  I pick surfing back up this year after a 20+ year hiatus and God damn I’m out of shape. You can roll off the couch and still do some heavy duty stuff on a snowboard. But rolling off the couch with a gut trying to surf is trouble.  I would say your general level of fitness has to be much higher to really enjoy surfing versus snowboarding. It’s a fuck ton of work for less than a minute ride, but the rush is so nice.

So hectic! I have been bodyboarding for decades and this place scares the hell out of me. A mate has surfed it.. it is so heavy.

Random question: anyone know of any decent sites / apps / communities where I could conceivably trade snowboard gear for surf gear? I'm thinking it'd probably have to be something pick-up based, since I imagine shipping surfboards is stupid expensive.

Wifey and I are trying for groms. Come next season, sneaking out for a 20 minute drive to the beach is going to be a much easier sell than a 3.5+ hour drive to Tahoe. I'm hoping I can eventually level up enough to just drive 5 minutes to Ocean Beach... but that's a pretty aggressive goal for my current kook form.

It's about time for winter surfing to really pick up here on the Great Lakes.. I don't know if I'll make it out this season.  Peeling off a wetsuit when it's 15 degrees out fucking SUCKS.

Yeah - hate wearing 5mm boots.  I've got a suit for every part of the year here..the best are summer storms and the waves don't break immediately/are super mushy, wearing a 2/1 suit feels like nothing at all.

not to blow up your secret spots, but roughly where are you?  i've heard of people surfing lake michigan somewhere near the southeast corner by the indiana/michigan border.  without understanding the winds around there, a good southerly with the shape of that lake would have a decent fetch.

no worries - the surf community on the west side seems cool for the most part, it's pretty small, maybe 40-60 people.  met some really cool dudes and girls out there, I've just recently in the past year learned how to actually somewhat read waves and actually turn on the face of a wave.

Essentially all along the coast we look for spots, my favorite has been the Hoffmaster State Park.  Norton Shores, St. Joseph, New Buffalo, South Haven, Holland, Ludington, Frankfort have turned out decent for us.  Definitely some days that involve 6 hours of driving and you don't have one good wave, which sucks.

are you in WI?  check out @burtongreatlakes on IG that dude is always ripping

ah, michigander.  new buffalo was the place i was thinking of.  that jetty at south haven looks like it could work.

i'm in vancouver bc, but there's a dedicated group of people here that surf local windswells and i admire their enthusiasm.  i've been out a couple times here but generally don't bother unless it happens to get windy on a weekend day and i didnt have much planned.  it's so easy to get skunked.

awwww yeah New Buffalo was my home break growing up and have surfed all over the south shore of Lake Michigan.  My first job was scooping ice cream at Oink's Dutch Treat.
