It's  like a race car crossed with a monster truck.  It wants to ride fast right over/through everything.  Sometimes when my buddies are turning around willows, I'll just weight my back leg and ride it straight through.

Haha, soooo what you are saying is the board was aptly named.

A race car battering ram is exactly what I need in my quiver.

The board size thing might sound silly, but nobody here is even remotely in the same universe of skill as someone like that. When you do the things they do, you need what you need. When you ride truly deep powder at a super high skill level, sending massive airs, a few extra CM, wider waist, and stiffer flex absolutely make a difference. That’s not even the point though, the point is that he couldn’t even get his own pro model from his longtime big-name sponsor in the size he prefers to ride, on top of the other stuff I mentioned, which is of course a bigger deal.

its not silly at all, 99% of snowboards exist in an 8cm range. 62 vs 58 or whatever is actually kinda huge.

Like I said, it doesn’t sound like the problems he’s been having have come from the Mervin family themselves.

He has always been one of my favorites as well, even putting aside the fact that he is from here and I grew up watching him. Don’t worry, he’s still got it, I think he just came out of a long brain fog, and being a pro at that level, with those pressures, and that amount of work, maybe didn’t jive so well anymore. Part of what he talked about in that interview was when he quit drinking, everything hit him all at once. There is obviously more to it than what was in that interview, but it gave a pretty good idea. One cool thing about him is he will lay it all out there. Some of you might have seen his long posts on social media. Definitely a “real dude,” which is true in “real life” too.

On that note, as beautiful and amazing as this place is, there can be a different effect on one’s mental health that can also be pretty to unique to this environment. The isolation, the weather, the different lifestyle - it’s kind of just straight up different here. Hard to explain if you’ve never been.

Another thing in the post I deleted was about Scott’s photos from the trip. I got to look through a couple hundred, and there was some sick stuff in there. Couple huge airs from Eric Jackson, but my favorite was a sequence of Lando. It was this step down that went out and over a cliff, with a big tree at the edge of the cliff. Front 3 indy nose bonk, and then he fell down from outer space like it would never end, and stomped in super deep snow. The trees looked like the tall, skinny ones in Yukon forests I’ve been through, and he had this really sick shot of Lando’s method, where it was perfectly placed between all the trees, with some cool lighting and shadows going on.

my take on tit was that he isn't prepared to risk his life anymore, and he was burnt out on all the unproductive travel bullshit.

Yeah, definitely that as well. As cool as it is to get to do the things those guys do, the reality of sustaining a career in it is something that us plebeians will probably never be able to grasp.

Sidenote about not being able to get his pro model in his normal size… apparently when he made that comment, he then goes, “and Travis shows up for a heli day like 10 boards deep!”
