Kazu arrested on drug smuggling charges in Japan. Only actual info I can find is that he allegedly brought in 57 grams last December. So, exactly 2 ounces. Sounds like he admitted to most of the allegations, but denied any intent to sell or profit. Which is pretty obvious… you aren’t going to deal with bringing weed over international borders for only 2oz.

It’s not what I would’ve done, but obviously it’s stupid since we are talking about weed. And he was clearly just bringing it over for personal use. Japan is definitely behind the times compared to the US, as far as that industry and product goes.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

He is fucked.

As 1st world countries go, Japan has the most restrictive and harshest drug laws imaginable.

A friend broke his leg on a trip there, full femur break, had to get a rod put in over there. Tylenol, that was it, even in a hospital. He was in excruciating pain for over a week.

Their drug smuggling laws are super harsh.

It's sucks to say, but he may have just ended his career...

I'm not joking, read the attached link, his only way to probably save his career will to be to move to Canada full time, but that will be super hard now with what just happened. Canada is a cool country and has yes, legal weed. But their immigration laws are super strict, if you've been convicted of a felony in another country you're a no-go to get into Canada....

Jeff Pensiero can and will tell you that loads of people miss out on their Baldface trips every year because of denied entry, it was so bad a few years ago that Baldface was actually emailing every client a form letter/info sheet about entry to Canada because that had such a high number of clients that couldn't get in.

Japan can thank the US occupation for those drug laws. Before that, marijuana was as normal as sake.

What he could do, instead of becoming a ramen chef in a C-class town, is connect with the growing scene of legalization advocates, of whom there should be many in the snowboard world, and become an activist, spread awareness. Democracy requires education after all.

This is saying it was wax. That is a whole lot of concentrate. Hope he can afford a good lawyer, if that's how it works in Japan.

Dear Kazu,

Get to the US. I'll put you up at my place for a spell. No one would suspect it.

dude that sucks BIG time for him. Wax is easier to travel with and hide, but 2oz internationally isn't exactly smart

Are you saying marijuana was as normal as sake once in Japan?

Yea, it's so much worse.

I will be so surprised if he ever steps foot in the US or CA again, or should I say, they let him through customs....

Sounds like Kazu is gonna be in a Japanese prison for a long, LONG time. Japan's criminal justice system has a reported 99% conviction rate, and simple possession of weed is a five year prison sentence. For conspiring to smuggle that much concentrate into the country... He's fucked.

just a correction, our immigration laws are total bullshit. we are a sieve.

travelling to Canada for a trip is different than immigrating here.

Chatted with Naoya Wada, one of the Moss riders, the other day. We talked about Kazu, who's a friend. Naoya said max penalty for first time offense is generally 21 days. Naoya's assumption/hopes is Kazu spends a short time in jail and then relocates to North America for a bit. I have a feeling this isn't realistic, but here's hoping.
