Interesting, I like that approach. Somewhat reminiscent of the all black shredder who used to do reviews mic’d up while riding. Dude seemed to understand the board well too, which is honestly not super common - most just regurgitate ad copy words and whatnot. Cool footage too, just cruisin’

Laidback approach, no need for heavy words 'high performing advanced board and such', cool riding too yeah

I think that many times they put a lot of content to look more technical and get more visits = more money. But I think there are some things that they contribute that are important in a sector where it´s difficult to test boards and where all manufacturers say that theirs are the best for everything ... A review of a rider gives a result that is not valid for almost anyone because the board will behave in one way or another depending on the speed and technique you have and the resort, the snow... There are incredible boards that only work at super high speeds ... If you don't have that level, what is the review worth? Other boards seem like they are only for pow but with good technique they are great on groomers ... But there are things that they say that gives you some important information. I usually see them all. It´s fun. I really like Mojane's videos and reviews ... they give me a lot of useful information ...

I BUILT A SHITTY REVIEW SITE.

My first review of the Nitro Cannon 203.

In seriousness, I launched a snowboard blog (after talking about for years) and don't want to turn it into a fucking review farm. Mostly I'm trying to fill a gap I feel exists in current snowboard media. I just happened to love this specific board and it was an easy first post.

Most reviews are either vague garbage (most retail site reviews) or try to hold themselves to some overly rigid rubric (most "review site" reviews). Or they make wild, sweeping statements off not nearly enough experience. I try to just go by feel, have some structure, and admit ignorance when I just didn't get a feel for something on a board.

I certainly don’t mean to say you won’t provide actual good content, because you will, but I do want to note that I think no matter what you do, we will always enjoy it because it’s you, and we like you 🥳

On the opposite note, angry made a couple top fives lately. One of them was bad trends, and he “called out” other vloggers, tagging them as poseurs mining “us” for views. The funny thing is every single person he mentioned is a far better rider than he has ever shown himself to be. I’ve said it before - I truly don’t care what your “ability” is, but when you project a certain image - and even talk down to others - if you can’t at least back it up, you can fuck right off. It’s so silly! I’ve been fascinated with the Dunning-Kruger effect for years, but man, has it been prevalent these days. He pinned it on them, and that in itself is the effect affecting him!

Yo Avran, I have air miles to fly you and would love for you to come have fun here, but you have to let me film you.

Yo David, looking forward to your content and would way rather give you my miles 😜

Posted that before I read it. Enjoyed! Sure, probably because you’ve been around us for some time now, but felt like I was hearing from a real person with humility, not trying to sell something. Kind of felt like I was there. Adds to the always-present stoke for the idea of an EL meetup.

As far as actual “reviews“ as opposed to EL stuff, I haven’t done many, but a couple or so on mountain weekly news. I would hope that’s how readers felt after my ramblings/watching edits! And if they do, I will officially not care that I was not paid for it like I was told. Wait what? Italics

Appreciate the hell out of that, @spenser.

Avran... has his place in the ecosystem and has made some great content (his Bootfitting 101 is the best thing on bootfitting I've ever found other than mining ski boot forums or talking to actual ski boot fitters), but yea, lack of humility is certainly one of his hallmarks.

This is really what I'm going for. Most all the review blogs out there are built around selling people shit through avenues that are broadly bad for the ecosystem... namely affiliate link redirect to big e-retailers that don't do shit for the community.

My goals for the project are to as much as possible be the chill smart shop guy everyone should have access to, hopefully flow some business to some good shops and snowboarders, and make some side hustle money for myself.

The affiliate money would be relatively easy beer money, but I'm thankfully secure enough in career that I can say no to it. Can't say I won't ever sell out, but I promise that if I ever do, it'll be for a more meaningful payday than that.

Edit:

Also, FUCK YES to an EL meat-up.

You should get a review column in a mag, it was good.

and your first post prominently features a photo of your bootie so you're definitely ready to be an influencer!

bootay

but in all seriousness it was a good review and on the type of board where that's valuable.
