@michi you're right, this year's Fusion feels like a noodle in comparison to the red crimson one hand flexing.. Is this becoming a trend for Nitro?

I can't say if it becoming a trend for Nitro, but this is what I can tell you from almost 2 decades in the industry and being  tech rep and R&D rider for a major brand.

Yes, most likely it is becoming a trend for Nitro.

But it happens with all brands as they grow.

Ever ridden a first or second year Capita Black Snowboard of Death? Those things were crazy stiff. Are they that stiff anymore? Nope. Not even close.

Wanna know the reason?

Sales growth.

As a brand and/or board becomes more popular ( with very few exceptions ) a brands boards generally get softer. Why? Because Joe Schmoe, your average weekend warrior who only rides 7.1 days a year according to the National Ski Area Association, wants to go buy that high end board that he/she saw in a video or saw a pro rider riding. The issue is the MFG wants them to have a good time on that deck, so as it ( the deck or brand ) becomes more popular, they soften up the decks so your 7.1 day a year rider will have a good time on it. If it's super stiff, your less skilled riders will more than likely not have a good time with the brand/board and might go else where on their next purchase.

It why Burtons are all general pretty soft. They want to make sure they keep that top market share. Yes, they have a range of stiffness in their brand relative to their other decks, but they don't make anything truly stiff ( at least in my opinion ) and they won't because they want Joe Schmoe to keep coming back and buying that $600 Custom every other year, or maybe every year. With the exception of one or two decks in the Burton line, your Joe Schmoe can buy any one of Burtons decks and be able to ride it and have a good time. If they make it stiff and the rider that only rides 7.1 days a year struggles with it because it's more board than they can handle, they may lose future sales.

You have to remember, we here on EL are the small minority. The vast majority of purchase power in the industry comes from weekend warriors, and brands want them, with their lesser skills to have fun on that "high-end" deck they just purchased.

So, generally, when a boards sales unit numbers move up, the deck softens, or has something else done to make it easier to ride by the masses. The easiest thing to do is to just soften the deck and make it more user friendly to a broader spectrum of the market participants.

Now, there are always exceptions to the this rule, but this is the general rule of thumb.

Sort of explains the Opti / Y thing too.

yoooo @spenser, you should probably look into next year’s Slash as a more Squash-like Fusion. shorter, stiffer tail, but similar front end look and feel.

it also comes in a 162, so there’s your opportunity for a bigger size before they soften it into the main line, haha

Isn't next year's slash a lot wider?

didn’t feel crazy wide, but maybe that’s why I felt comfortable on the smaller 156.

Probably good for twin riders who want a pow freestyle deck.

I can definitely see spending a lot of time on this when it hasn’t snowed in a while, and during spring for ripping groomer & side hit laps. Also won’t let you down on a pow day.

This is as close to a twin as I will ride, and it serves the exact same purpose for me, but makes way more sense in actuality. This is the type of board I should have been riding all those years on twins.

All this + the comments about switch riding and fun... I think I want a 54 Fusion. I don't care for the 2020, but if I could find the 19' maroon with the little fox that would be rad. Also, the upcoming 2021 tie dye is super tempting (as long as it's not softened). Only hesitancy is that I kind of would like a tighter sidecut (and maybe even a slimmer profile which I know is sacrilege).

red/maroon is 159 yellow is the 154. I think drink water still has the 154 available as well.

Bought nitro ivy bindings and I love how flexible the base is and the comfort is great.

Same freedom of movement as with contact pros I have been riding but more comfortable.

Been loving my Team Pro bindings as well. Always when I'm on them, I forget about them. Cush, enough flex, responsive, comfortable.. So good.

hows the stiffness vs the regular teams?

I'm ditching step ons since working for altra running my feet have spread out from wearing our shoes for 2 years. After my trip to jackson now like 3 or 4 weeks later my feet still feel weird from cramming. So i need to size up and to size up in step ons means sizing up in bindings since im in a 10.5 now and I dont want to size up to large bindings since most my boards have pretty small ww's.  So I'm going back to Adidas Acerra? gotta stack up that binding quiver again.

Not a huge difference overall. Back into the highback, doesn't really feel different, maybe slightly better rebound. The ankle strap is stiffer and not as squishy, but not hammock level responsive. Very comfortable though. The main difference is that the lower highback surrounding the heel is much wider, so it accommodates more boot models. As it isn't as cupped overall as the regular team, you don't feel quite the same level of support / locked in, but that is compensated with the ankle strap.

Way more similar than different, but still my favorite do it all binding ever. Can just dial back the forward lean and they work super well on my park oriented Niche Theme as they do on the Pentaquark. Very fast technical freeriding on a stiff board, I'd go for something more locked in. Slightly prefer the Union Team Forces on the 162 PYL, for instance. Bit more snappy.

I sure did, I loved it. Stiff and aggressive, taper and camber as well as a tail which is nice for drops. I rode it 2 days after the storm so it was mostly tracked I found a few pow stashes but it was mostly uneven terrain and it did well. I'm the worst at reviewing boards. For me its an I loved it or I did not love it no specifics. I cant focus on the small details. I'll be curious to ride my fusion, OG squash and banker all after each other in one day. But my days are limited I might have to do that next season. I'm planning to move to Bend, OR this fall so hopefully I'll get many more days in next year and be able to contribute a lot more on here next season.

My nitro quiver now consists of those 3 nitros mentioned above and the orange nitro pow and then I have the united shapes quiver which consists of the 2017 limited release orbit 157, cadet 162 and the 2017 cadet 162 and soon to be united shapes covert 161 split.
