Thanks. I knew there had to be something. I'm surprised I hadn't encountered this before.

Good lord, what an overly complicated split.

Whatever is going on here:

CF56BFE5 5826 4855 B520 7CD45574AEE9

Got a pair of Plum Feyans.  Chalk it up to French design/engineering.

Here's the interface to their bindings: https://www.fixation-plum.com/en/mountain-accessories/9752-ima-imd-bleu.html

The engineering is beautiful.  However when I saw how many individual parts it was when installing, I immediately sent a note to them asking for spares in case anything fell off.  I still can't give a definitive answer long term of Sparks vs Plums just yet.  The build quality is very good on the Plums, how it holds together is TBD...

Not split related, but split-adjacent. Parker lent me some Drift Boards. I'm planning on grabbing a set. I was initially planning on them mostly for pow surfing, but I think I'll actually end up using them a lot more often that that. I'll probably use them for a good chunk of the time in the BC, unless I'm expecting DEEP pow or going on a bigger mountain mission with a long approach. Especially if I'm yo-yo-ing a line, it's just more efficient not have to putz with skins over multiple transitions. With my Karakorams especially it's nice because I can put the KKs on the Drifts to tour up, then transition them onto a solid with Quiver Connectors for the way down.

Yeah, that set up looks pretty ideal for sessioning a fun zone that's close to the road.  We are spoiled for great options these days.

Hoe-Made Drifters Experiment #1: Once upon a time younger me made an attempt at a DIY split which I abandoned because reasons including scoring a factory one. So I had this cut in half board laying around and thought... why not cut it in half again? So I did. And then I rounded all the sharp edges on a belt sander so they don't rip up my backpack and then I filled in the holes I made long ago with epoxy.

Drifters001

Next: I have some Spark R&D baseplates with the pin system, and Spark is going to sell me some heelcups for them and I'll fashion some straps somehow. Still thinking through the straps. I'm not sure if I'll just screw the mounting bracket to the board like a monkey or if I'll drill it out and use inserts like a less lazy monkey.

I'll find some old used skins for cheap and thinking I might fully glue them to the bases avoinding the need for clips and shit. Idk what I'd benefit from having it so I can take them off.

Any ideas? Input?

Ordered Phantom Hercules hooks and Karakoram's new Ultraclip 3C to compare this season.

The KK 3C is basically a Hercules with a lever clip. As I've said before (maybe elsewhere) I am not convinced the lateral tension of clips actually does anything other than stress the inserts, but let's see. 🙂

(the Phantoms are the "through holes" model so they'll go on the ol' Korua Pencil I have)

Think the K can still be improved, but it looks better than previous versions.
