My friend Lars again, lives in Fernie and is the ambassador & dealer for Stranda now. This is how the fuck you heelside. Barely grazing the snow with his body, not even moving any particles, that’s all g-force and high skill & technique, and he said it was the last level before being what most consider to be icy. You can see his line behind him that goes straight over to the looker’s-right of his head. Think this might be on his Cheater 170W? Personally I can’t think of who carves better than him, although Wolken is right up there these days. I admit Knapton is skilled in his way, but I can’t get past... well, him. Or his style.

I am hoping to get a cheater 170 some time.

Yeah, didn't know who he was til you mentioned him before. He's def a turn master/inspo for masterful technique.

And def see you getting a Stranda. Edge of the World shop seems to be the Stranda NA headquarters these days, with how they're promoting them lol. But yeah, 59 Shorty looks dope, too.

He essentially runs that shop, and has a close relationship with Mats (stranda founder) so the connection makes sense haha. He brought them in and got a demo fleet recently, and people are loving them.

I’ve known him for over 10 years now. He was in a relationship with a local woman (while she lived abroad) who’s the sister of one of our shred friends. Met him years ago when he visited and have kept a friendship since. Great person, and superb rider.

Shorty 64 is the other one I’d buy. Aesthetically I most like the tree surfer and bowlrider, but guess why I’d pass 😜 pipeliner looks nuts too

Lol, just seen. And aesthetically, like the Cheater and Shorty best. Love how "Low Camber" is already at 6mm, and standard at 11mm also.

Shorty 164 is on my demo list. And Lars' carving footage is nuts.

Took the day off work yesterday to join Mark Rainery, Sam, and our friend Jack up Mt Troy, a BC spot adjacent to Eaglecrest. They built a hip booter the day before, and we spent the whole day hiking a couple lines and then filming the jump when the light hit.

But yeah, enjoy dude!

Not currently, but know a few people who are. Just following/learning, mainly. Interesting stuff.

Snuck away from work for a little riding today and it ruled. Didn’t get to ride much last year due to traveling a lot for the job I had at the time and then covid so didn’t have a chance to really improve much. I’ve been trying to nail a clean BS 180 since a day or two in this season and I finally pulled it off today. Felt amazing.

We don’t often get powder in Upstate NY, but after a couple days of it in January I kind of get a little disappointed when I have to stick to groomers haha got a taste of it and now I just want to ride it every day

In the midst of maybe my best riding week ever. Rode 5 out of the past 6 days, 2 EPIC pow days, 1 decent pow day, 1 so-so pow day, and 1 fast groomer burner day. Plus I'm still up here for a few days.

Friday

Had only planned to do a day trip up to Squaw last Friday. Drove up Thursday night... 3 hour drive became 6 hours because of snow and road closures. Crashed in a buddy's driveway in Truckee in my car. Friday took us 3 hours to get to Squaw... got lucky with terrain opening and RIPPED upper mountain that hadn't opened in 2 days due to storm.

The wife texted me on Friday, told me to just stay up because it'd been such a pain in the ass to get up. Luckily I pack emergency changes of clothes in my trunk, and slept in public Sno-Parks in the car.

Saturday

On Saturday, skipped Squaw because I expected a shit show crowd (it was a shit show as I understand it) and went to Homewood, a little epic resort. Dropped Quail Face, a zone that's a pain in the ass to get to and hadn't opened in 2-3 days... just 900 ft of untouched, steep pow turns. I dropped a 20-25 ft cliff, landed clean in a pillow and ripped away another 400 ft of vert. Definitely the biggest send I've had since at least my 20s (I'm 35). My second attempt I put a foot-long gash into my Dupraz hitting a rock on the run out... but it was worth it heh.

Sunday

I drove back partially back home to the Sierra foot hills, my wife drove up, and we stayed in a hotel. Drove back up to Squaw. Tons of traffic (lot filled up by 10:00 AM, we BARELY made it), but oddly the mountain fell pretty empty. Waited 20 minutes for our first lap at 11:00 AM, then didn't wait more than 5 minutes the rest of the day. Great mostly sunny groomer day, was a nice breather after beating up my legs in pow. Filmed a few top-to-bottom runs of the wife on the iPhone-- wish she could return the favor but she's definitely not comfortable being that close to me while riding haha.

Monday

My buddy went back home to the Bay Area and said I could use his place while he wasn't around for a coming storm! This was unexpected and super nice of him. We drove back home on Sunday night to take care of a few appointments in SF, but drove back Monday night to beat the storm (luckily came in late so the roads were clear).

Tuesday

Worked in the morning after the storm got delayed coming in, rode in the afternoon in the storm. Got some good turns, but it was a leg burner day. Snow came in super heavy, lots of dust on crust section, visibility was shit, and a ton of terrain didn't open because of visibility / rain. Had a close call with a tree, had a bit too much slop in the boots and lost control briefly in Sierra cement. Had to take a hit to a pine tree base-first. Thought I might have sprained my ankle but thankfully I don't even feel it today. Called it pretty early. Had fun but my legs were beat and the close call was my body telling me to take it easy.

Wednesday

Got up early for early laps, didn't expect much because of how heavy the storm was... but up high it was excellent. Just lapped ~1-2 ft of perfect cream cheese pow 5 or 6 times before crowds even showed up. Lower mountain was 75% fun, 25% scary because of some frozen wind-scoured patches and avy debris. I nearly sent it over a roller only to find I was on top of broken crown of a small slide... nearly found out sent it with avy debris 10 ft below. That would have sucked. Thankfully pulled up short. Saw tons of inbounds slides, wouldn't want to be in the backcountry right now except in super conservative terrain.

And I'm here through Saturday. Planning on taking morning laps tomorrow (a local shop lent me an Orca for a day while they work on the Dupraz), afternoon laps Friday, and morning laps Saturday. Legs are feeling GOOD and strong, don't think I've ever ridden this much before in so short a time period. Lungs are also feeling good. Overall just in good mid-season shape.

sounds like a nice stretch of riding kimchi, i miss tahoe and need to get back out there next season. going to steal your post format 🙂

winter has finally turned on a bit in the front range in colorado, had two very awesome days from the end of this past week into the weekend.

Thursday

Solo mission to Winter Park, had my morning clear of meetings, so i drove up early anticipating sketchy driving conditions. small avy had slid into the road on Berthoud Pass on my way down covering up one of the lanes, fracture looked about 30 feet wide or so and this was a small hill. our base layer is.... quite bad. have only been in the backcountry on sleds so far this season in low angle and it has still felt unsettling watching the sleds go all the way into the dirt.

WP got about 17 inches from the storm, and it was glorious. popped out my lens on my M3's on the first chair like a jack wagon, so had to do my first lap sans goggles, that was painful. it was deep everywhere and lots of fun was had, got to do a few lift line cliff drops and headed back to denver to work in the afternoon.

Saturday

rode with some homies at WP again, and the first 3 laps of the day were knee deep everywhere or more. very windy overnight which was favorable for filling in things. lift lines became truly absurd by 10am, so i was glad we got one of the first chairs.

it is now deep enough to do all of the very fun terrain on the mountain and not hit too many sharks. landed on my head on a rodeo attempt, and that was when the day got called. thankfully i am not too sore today!

forecast is looking good, fingers crossed for more pow riding here in CO
