hey @matic: what'cha doin' in Aomori? That's my winter haunt.

i'm always trekking around japan when i can! if time/money allows i spend months at a time in japan and utilize the JR pass to all corners. also, the rail system goes deep into the most rural areas and not just tourist destinations. but with the aging population some stations are hanging it up where it is reaching ghost town stats.

do you base yourself in aomori city?

Very very cool. I should go around a bit this winter…

Yeah, wife's from there so we stay in the family home and I drive up to Hakkōda or Iwaki every day I can.

Give a shout if yer passing through (or touring around again…)

Have any of you ever taken a ferry from Honshu to Hokkaido? Flew last year, but thinking of trying something different this Japanuary...

I have, but that was over 20 years ago when I was living in Aomori. Really the only reason to take the ferry is if you're driving.

Yeah that's exactly why I'm asking. Last year we rolled around Hokkaido in an RV for the most part, then spent the last few days in Niseko with a hotel & rental car. As of this moment, the loose plan for this year is to RV the entire time and spend some time in the Hakuba/Myoko areas as well as Hokkaido (skipping Niseko entirely this time around, maybe with the exception of Moiwa).

Wow! Driving from Aomori to Hakuba? That's 9+ hours (in the Summer) of rural Japanese toll roads! You dudes are hardcore.

Then the ferry is pretty easy to use. I think there are 8 a day and it's less the 4 hours.

I've got a season pass for Hakuba Valley this year, but I'm thinking about taking a long road trip at some point in the season. I'd like to get back to Aizu and hit up a bunch of my old spots in Tohoku. Maybe make it all the way up to Hokkaido and then come back.

Well shit, since you've got a house on wheels too, we might need to link up along the way. I'll let you know once we get our dates locked in.

I live like 5 minutes drive from the Aomori ferry port, so y'know, holler.

(I also may head up to do AST1 at Niseko this year.)

Kutchan is the larger down just up the road from Niseko on the way to Rusustsu, you can probably find cheaper accommodations there. There are also buses that go between Niseko & Rusustsu with a lift ticket included for about $60-80 iirc.

We're staying close to Lake Toya, not too far a drive to Rusutsu. And gonna rent a van, most likely (hope they come with winter tires there? Mildly concerned about driving on left side of road for the very first time. Esp if it's dumping 😅).

And that sounds dope @Mookie, will def msg you closer to and coordinate. Prob the 13th, as we fly back to Tokyo on the 14th.

@gd

Checking back in since my old account got deleted. Shit is fast approaching, and I am still in terrible shape lol.

Thanks for checking in, dude. Lol ya, I hear that. Can't believe we fly out on Sun already ... Though, from what @Bopuc recently mentioned, it's been a slow start there 😰? I've been keeping an eye on the Moiwa page, esp in the last week or so. Thankfully, it's been snowing a bit more, but still a little concerned. Hopefully dumps a bunch soon 🙏🏻.

Yeah, I've been keeping on eye on that too. Definitely low tide, but I've seen people getting some nice slashy turns on YouTube, so I remain hopeful. I got skunked in AK 2 years ago, so this trip needs to work out lol. I leave next Saturday.

I'm headed out to Furano next Weds, moving on to Niseko area over the weekend.  A buddy just came back from Niseko and tells me that it's low tide off piste.  The bright spot is that it has been snowing.  Not gonna lie, but the season so far is vibing like the skunked season of 16/17.  The usual weather patterns just aren't setting in.
