We had heard JG no longer works at B, but was just told from a reputable friend-source that he was fired, and apparently Terje was let go? Who knows

…but they have a new Burton Ambassadors team?

Oh. Are we seeing Burton move into other sports? Not going to be completely snowboard centric anymore?

I think the ambassadors just get free gear as long as their posting content, our rep said that Burton has always had ambassadors but it wasn’t promoted as heavy previously. Wasn’t Jill Perkins a Burton ambassador awhile back,

In the recent past, they've been making the pivot into general outdoors-y lifestyle stuff. They did a three-season tent collab with Big Agnes a couple years ago.

Makes sense. With climate change as a near- to medium-term existential threat, if I ran a snowboard company with aspirations of still existing in 20 years, I'd be looking to diversify revenue streams as much as possible.

agree, branching out makes sense, but not sure how the ambassadors program leads to that conclusion. looks like they're most/all snowboarders, not pro-level skills, but pretty deep into it.

also making sense: all around rad / interesting people might do more to build the brand and move product than, say, jake canter.

Four things contributed to that idea / question to me.

1. Ambassador programs always seem to me to be a multisport thing. (vs. like an Am program, or a flow program, which is just a subset of the pro-team)

2. A few of the profile pics of the people in the program looked to me to be in other sports, and the statement next to the team talks about opening the door to more type of people. Seems to me to say...not just snowboarding anymore.

3. I certainly remember the (hideous safarai) tents and camping gear they had done a few years back. The mushroom ones were dope af. But yeah, it makes sense, maybe?

4. I'm still trying to get a bead on the decision to let JG go, and in my mind removing some opponents or obstacles to a big shift in the direction of the brand might be justification.

Ambassadors from other branches is just likable people that are active in some sort of community different from snowboarding, but still have a passion for it. And most likely big on social media. So maybe arts, economy, politics, gyms, other sports, filthy rich people and so on.. It makes sense.

Ah yes the Burton Instagram team, very 2021.

I don't recognize any of them except for Jessa Gilbert. I stumbled upon her Instagram a bit ago and it's rad. Her art is very Iguchi-esque (if I'm allowed to compare). Honestly, seeing as her profile got me stoked, it makes sense. Go check it out.

@c-fuzzy: agreed - moves towards being a "lifestyle brand" and not a snowboarding company can look really awkward (pottery barn anyone?), but that can be such a gray area since snowboarding is so much about the lifestyle.

it was interesting to see that a lot of the ambassadors have pretty meager insta followings. i'm sure that'll grow now, but they weren't just looking for "influencers"

in case it isn't obvious, i'm kind of a fan of the idea. i'd rather watch riding clips of the team, but i'm just more interested in someone who's a backcountry guide, an artist, or on the sustainability team for natural selection, or leading work on indigenous people and the outdoors. that's just way more likely to get me to identify with a brand, and, as much as i'd like to say that i'm not influenced by "branding" and just buy the best gear,  lots of brands make really good gear, but not a lot of brands have an identity i connect with.

ambassadors also seems like a way to generate more diverse representation in snowboarding - in all the obvious ways (race, class, gender, geography), but also diversity in the range of lives one can lead connected to snowboarding and the mountains without being a pro. that kind of shift seems like what snowboarding is/should be about in terms of pushing boundaries, upsetting the status quo, etc.

Out with the old guard, in with the new with Jake gone.  B has been and always will be notorious for this.  Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually get rid of Bang, Sollors, and Rencz as they've been around for AGES.  A shame if JG and Terje was tossed.

I can't remember who the board designer was that did Hometown Hero, but based on a few youtube clips of Craig's, he seemed like he was the guy doing the protos and designs.  Maybe JG just took a back seat.

I don't fault the lifestyle move.  If anyone was going to do it, it was gonna be the B.

*Disclaimer - I've bought their lifestyle shit and have a Burton cooler when I want a cold drink or do a picnic
