From the Sprocking Cat himself: https://www.pleasuremag.com/feed/terjetalks

Finished the vid earlier. Interesting convo; good to hear Terje's side on things. Bit eye opening hearing Torment mag didn't release his apology letter, which maybe could've helped calm things sooner? The Nico part of the discussion was interesting, too.

Terje is one of the goats but realistically he isn't driving any new customers to the company.  The industry has changed where pro riders need to be content machines or winning contests.  Add his controversial comments on top of that and from a business perspective it makes sense to let him go.

disagree. he is very influential to old farts like me that actually have the money to buy shit

@crustacean I'm an old fart too that loves Burton and spends entirely to much of my disposable income on their products.  But for everyone of us there are probably 10 new kids getting into snowboarding that don't even know who Terje is that will be begging for a new Kilroy or Blossom this season because of Zeb or Luke and the content they are putting out.  Business wise the focus should be on turning those kids into guys like us.

Would it have been cool for Terje to be a forever Burton guy, definitely.

I went back and listened to the Nico part bc I missed it before.

I think it's worth pointing out that this was a great conversation with perspectives and nuance which is what 99% of our conversations are, but what the media reports is either that 1% OR they take those nuanced conversations and turn them into twisted headlines for clicks.

It's like the fact that globally there are like 5 human shark attacks every year, but the coverage of those makes it seem like sharks are really aggressive and dangerous.

To circle back to the Nico, Terje is saying he got caught up in the conspiracy narrative.

And that's my point, the narratives we're being given are really fucked up because it gets clicks and then the more you click on them the more fucked up narratives you get fed in recommendations and pretty soon everything's shark attacks and they're outside your door and they're in your house and it's fucking with peoples minds.

And just to say it again, if we look at the genesis of many of these narratives, they're coming from hostile foreign governments who are using big data to target issues that are known to be contentious and problematic in societies and sow the seeds of division in people to weaken our societies and our democracies.

And that's not a conspiracy. There's hard evidence of it and there are democracies that have fallen because of it already.

I agree with this. Seeing his style of riding evolve as he got older was very influential as it's something I relate to more… I don't really look at anything B has outside their family tree lineup

So, while I think it's plausible to an extent. I don't think this is a solid truth. I'd say for sure it over took him, but "caught up"...

Nico isn't a US citizen and doesn't live in the the US, so, to some degree he was seeking out info and trying to participate in a debate about a country and its politics where he doesn't reside and is not a citizen.

The US just got out of Afghanistan after 20 years. While I know some of us have mentioned it from time to time, since we were there and/or may have known someone who served there, how many people do you know delving deep into their politics? I mean fuck, my cousin did 3 tours there and I could give two fucks about that place, even though it has been a world wide topic now for 20 years.

Or, once again, it may be discussed casually, every once in a while, but whom do you know that goes deep into or gets "caught up" in Chinese or Russian politics for that matter? The vast majority of our products come from China, and they are, for better or worse, a global power and I don't know a fucking person that is "caught up" in their countries internal political debates and letting it ruin their fucking lives.

The COIVD shit, I can see, that is global, and the disinformation campaigns were directed world wide.

While, yes, the US political realm is discussed globally, the foreign actors ( & Qanon ) were targeting the US population, not Swiss citizens.

I feel sorry for the dude, or anyone for that matter, that let Qanon ruin their lives, but at the end of the day, they sought it out to an extent and choose to keep reading, click follow, post and repost and all the shit that went down, and is still going down.

There is not a single rider out there that influences me to buy a damn thing. I buy what works for me based on what it is and what I need. In fact the only product that I have that has any Pro connection is my boots, and that just happens to be because DC boots fit my feet best, Not because T-Rice wears them.

I agree with some of that. The US citizens are notorious for being quite myopic to our own existence and quite uneducated about the politics in other countries. And this ignorance of the global powers shifts taking place is part of the reason why US citizens as a people can't seem to grasp that we're being targeted to turn against our own selves.

The people of other countries often follow US politics and more informed about our goings on, and also just the world in general, and I think part of that is cultural. But also global awareness of the US system is the spread of our cultural influence, exposure to US centric social media and of course economic and military dominance for the past 100 years.

Without diving too deep into it other countries and cultures have their own social rifts, contentions, and historic sore spots which are being targeted and exploited as well. ie. Brexit

I'm unable to comment specifically on Nico or his grasp on reality. But sadly his situation seems increasingly rather common, even among some pretty reasonable folks. And I'm just using that as a springboard to bring up a perspective that maybe will help raise awareness of what is imo a growing concern.

This is imo a war on our society and individual mental health by other actors on the world stage being waged through disinformation campaigns sowing internal and external conflicts across internet platforms.

That, and outerwear/AK. Haven't really been impressed by any boards from B in the last little while, aside from the Dump Truck really. And even still, wish they had made the sidecut a bit bigger.

But tbf, the CartelX is pretty good also, imo.

I don’t know man, a few years back when terje was calling out forest bailey for jibbing a picnic table was kinda weird. Terje saying it was gay, forest was gay for posting it on Instagram, and forest responding pretty neutrally that he shouldn’t be using that word.. the whole thing was weird. It’s pretty fucking easy to not use certain words when describing something and yeah - people should have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes but when you miss that mark pretty poorly, there’s gonna be backlash.

After working in a shop this past year, no one is buying a B board because of terje. I don’t always love the direction B is going in, a lot of their graphics are fucking awful, but they do a lot for the snow community and have been the best brand to work with shop wise.

I'm a middle aged dude who has followed Terje, Nico, Lynn, Guch, the Uninc crew, older Euros and to some extent Rice.  All these guys I've looked up too for snowboard inspiration.  They all bring in a unique personality, background, and history that makes snowboarding what it is today.  This is a good thing.  I haven't even discussed the women and that is an entire thread in itself.

Does anyone truly believe based on who you are or what you looked like any pro would not ride with you?  Snowboarding for fucks sake was an outer fringe sport that was banned from countless slopes if people forgot.  They didn't care if you are male/female/non-binary, YOU COULDN'T RIDE THERE.  AND to make it even better, the people and groups who banned you, took your sport to make money off you!  Do you see any apologies happening there?

Regardless if you're a 4 year old child or a 48 year old legend, we all make mistakes and are not immune to them.  It takes an honest and mature human to realize, self reflect, and apologize for those mistakes and we should all appreciate that.  If we were the cancel and erase anything we didn't like, I'm pretty sure no one would be left and snowboarding wouldn't be here.

What I find shit is that B hasn't said a goddamn word about it.  Work together, improve, make the world a better place.  Recognise the history, live the present based on the history, and improve the future.  I think we can all agree Burton has never been perfect and have made their fair share of mistakes.  They need to grow the fuck up.

*Disclaimer, I own a Landlord b/c of Terje and I'm keep it.  What I'm not going to do is buy Burton anymore (and I love their outerwear).  FUCK!
